Many people like postage stamp collecting. Some like it because they can make money buying and selling rare stamps.
It is just plain fun for others who like to spend time filling up their collection albums with their favorite stamps. It is a relaxing hobby for some people who find it a way to find calmness from the everyday pressures of life. Some find the stamps fine pieces of art.
There are some beautiful stamps out there and for the person who appreciates art work on a small scale the stamp is a great place to find this. There are some funny movies that involve stamp collecting. One movie is Brewsters Millions with Richard Pryor. The plot is about Pryor having to spend millions of dollars in a given time in order to earn a great inheritance.
The story has been done before but the funny scene with the stamp is great. In the movie Pryor buys a stamp with an airplane that is upside down. It is the only stamp that was printed because the printer realized his mistake and corrected the print.
The stamp had a defect and is one of only a few in existence. So Brewster thinks he is lowering his wealth by buying the stamp. But he finds out that the stamp only increased in value after he buys it. The lawyer who wants him to fail and is controlling the terms of the estate rubs it in on a phone call to Brewster.
So instead of reducing the size of the amount of money he has to spend Pryor now has even more money to spend. The lawyer is the foil in the story. He does not want Pryor to win. So Pryor sends the lawyer a letter in the mail saying he is almost done with his spending.
The stamp is now virtually worthless. So take that as a lesson do not use your rare stamp collection to mail your letters. But have fun with it no matter your reason for starting your collection.
