Gap Year South East Asia - A Popular Destination
I started my first gap year travel 6 years ago. I arrived at Bangkok for my gap year in South East Asia. I was knackered but full of energy. I graphed a taxi to Khao San road where my hotel was, dropped my stuff to a dip in the pool and went off to the streets to sit on a terrace with a cheap Thai beer to watched the world go by.
I remember the first time I was on Khao san road during my gap year in South East Asia. I closed my eyes and heard 6 different languages, smelt a hundred different things, heard music (western and Thai) in the back ground …wow impressive. I wanted to experience it all but was also very happy that two days later I was on my way to a tropical island away from this all.
More that being a bit nervous for myself, it was the environment who thought I was getting a bit mental to take a gap year in South East Asia all by myself. But when I asked them , why do you not join me hen, they all had the excuse of a relationship, kids, good careers etc. So there I went. All alone, nervous as hell but so excited to start the new chapter in my life.
I decided to take 6 month of from work and made sure that my boss would still have a spot for me in his team when I would come back. He still had a job opening for me, but I never came back. During my gap year in South East Asia I found out more about myself, and decided I was strong, independent and was never going to work as an office manager again. This gap year travel changed my live and I thank myself everyday that I took one!
I saw rice fields, met great individuals, learned new languages, saw the impressive and scary killing fields, the bounty beaches, hired a motor bike to drive though the hills in Laos, visited local markets, dived the most beautiful places and really it made me a richer and happier person.
After my gap year in South east Asia I HAD to find a way to continue his life style. I became a divemaster and hat paid for my life in various countries, I did some translation jobs and then after meeting the right man after 4 years of travelling, we decided to travel for ever and become the first Dutch Gap Year company, exploring cool stuff for the Dutch youngster to go too.
When I arrived on Bangkok airport to start my gap year in South East Asia I felt so proud I made it!!! Ok, I admit, it was a long flight but with my IPod, some magazines and the open bar (!!) on the flight I survived pretty well. I took a taxi to the hotel pre reserved by the gap year company and arrived in Chas!! Whaaa quite a shock, so many people, so many noises and so may smells. Luckily the hotel was heaven!
After arriving in Bangkok on my Gap year in Thailand I slept, I shopped till I dropped, and 2 days later I went to a paradise island named Koh Tao. I was picked up by a great rep, and I stayed in a real nice and friendly resort where I also did my diving. This seems all ages ado now. I started travelling when I was 29, I am 35 now and still on the road! Earning my money with my own travel company to get you out there as well and enjoy life!!
